Promoting the bicycle

How we can sign our way out of the traffic congestion nightmare

A talk by Paul Mason of Cicero Translations

Date: 6.30 pm Thursday 14th April

In 2010 Moira Gemmill, Design Director at the V&A in London, spoke to the Society about her work which helped turn the museum into a global leader.  In April last year Moira was killed in a road traffic accident whist cycling in the city. This talk will be given within a few days of the anniversary of her death.

Paul Mason is a dedicated advocate of cycling as a form of transport. He believes that widening existing roads and building new ones will not solve the chronic traffic congestion problem faced by the UK.  Rather, we need to reduce the volume of traffic through a method which is hidden in plain view.

Britain is 50 years behind the Netherlands and Denmark in re-enabling short journeys by bike or on foot, thereby creating a healthier and happier society.

Cycle ways

Paul says the aim should be to create a network of safe, segregated cycle paths and walkways, but in recognising that our deeply engrained motor car culture renders this a long term ambition, well designed and implemented signage for existing arrangements is fundamental.

Paul’s talk will cover the full range of issues including types of signs, costs, how signs can be used to make junctions safe (most pedestrian and cyclist deaths and serious injuries happen at junctions).  He will also talk about indirectly related signage, e.g. ‘20’s plenty’ to reduce the speed differential between cars and other road users.

Paul Mason is the Senior Partner of Cicero Translations and has been a committed and hands on member of Society for many years.  He gave a talk to members on multilingual signage in 2009 and Cicero Translations has supplied many members of the Society over the last 10 years, mainly in the area of airport signage and publications.
