Reader’s corner book of the month: January 2025

Featuring publications of relevance to our industry, including those cited in SDS e-newsletter lead articles and suggested additional reading, we’ve recently relaunched the SDS Reader’s Corner book of the month page. Each month we will showcase a suggested read that relates to our professional areas of interest, be it a seminal publication or something more tangential. We hope the books we select will offer you insights and inspiration.

If you any suggestions of books, particularly newly published ones, that you think would be of interest to our community, please email us: enquiries@signdesignsociety.co.uk.

For January ’25 we feature ‘Creating Sustainable Cities’ by Herbert Girardet (published 1 August 1999 by Green Books).

Version 1.0.0

Synopsis

“How can we put the pulsing heart of conviviality back into our cities? How can we make sure of creating cities of diversity for the new millennium: places of cultural vigour and physical beauty that are also sustainable in economic and environmental terms? This Schumacher Briefing shows the way forward.”

Review

Creating Sustainable Cities is a very digestible 72 pages, yet I savored it over the course of several weeks as it is dense with information and insight. I see it as a key and essential text within the broader discussion of sustainable urbanism- a true challenge for many cities this century and one that has significant relevance for planetary health as well.”
