Presented by Maria Papiez. Maria has 20 years of experience in architecture, science, and education. She is a registered architect with degrees in environmental chemistry and biology, and a passion for sustainable design grew from her mutual interest in the built and natural environments. Maria will discuss health and equity (for people and nature) through material choices. Designers have great influence when it comes to the materials we select in our work, and with that comes great responsibility to our fellow humans and all nature. Material lifecycles can have negative impacts on health, so let’s use the frameworks, programs, and certifications that can help us be stewards for all.
Key take-aways
- Salvage and reuse materials, and design for disassembly.
- Choose local products to support local artisans, community, and economy, all while reducing impact.
- Go with the Goldilocks Principle: use just the right amount of materials, not too much and not too little.
- Extra: Start with a few choices – don’t feel like you must do it all at once.
