AMS internal wayfinding signage by Katrin Beste

Our 2025 programme of seminars started with Katrin Beste (from Vienna-based d-licious Grafik Design studio) discussing her work designing a new wayfinding system for all 120 jobcentre branches in Austria (Arbeitsmarktservice, AMS), rolled out across the country since 2022. A key element of the design was to create an approach and system that could be described in a manual that would enable AMS to create appropriate wayfinding information going forward, without the need for any further expertise and / or help. While developing the new AMS wayfinding strategy, these questions helped to guide Katrin and her colleagues: What information is already available in advance of visiting a jobcentre branch? How does the organisation want new visitors to behave and feel? How does AMS want to be perceived as a brand? The AMS wayfinding solution includes a manual that explains the practicalities of which sign to put where. It does this in a way that advocates for a simplified, friendlier, user-centred approach, including not only typeface and pictograms but also wording, making visitor navigation easier and less stressful.

About our speaker

Katrin Beste is a studied nutritional scientist and graphic and information
designer, based in Vienna. Since graduating from the New Design University in St. Pölten, she has been working at d-licious, where she designs and plans wayfinding systems. Pictograms and site maps in particular meet her desire for abstraction and simplification. With 12 years’ experience in marketing and sales at a large corporation, Katrin adds conceptual and analytical expertise to her projects. Katrin also works independently, e.g. for Wiener Linien. She also does work on a voluntary basis, most recently as co-founder of the association for the “Conference for Information Design”. Together with Andreas Koop, she founded the small publishing house “Edition Emil”, for which she also writes.
