Women of different ages sitting on scaffolding platform, seemingly in a built environment

An overview of the origins of patriarchal city systems and roadmap to more gender equitable cities for everyone.

As women we live as second-class citizens within our urban habitat – a fact that is intrinsic to our daily existence as we move through what is obstensibly a man’s world. We know the built environment was built only for a few – and for motives that priorize even fewer based on structures of control that have been in place in our cities for centuries.

But we also know that it doesn’t have to be this way. And better yet – that it can work for all of us, and not just for the few.

As an urban anthropologist, Katrina Johnston-Zimmerman has made it her mission to understand the city – and our place in it – from the past to the present for a more heart-centered future. Her advocacy on gender equity and cities has manifested in keynotes around the world from Amsterdam to Santiago, and she was even recognised as one of BBC’s 100 Women of the World in 2019.

This is the second of two sessions. The first is on 5 February 2025 at the same time of the day.
