Richard Ardagh explores the treasures of London’s Type Archive and the craft, design and history of the printed letter.

Richard will introduce Type Archived, his recently published book documenting the treasures of traditional typefounding held at London’s Type Archive.

Drawing on highlights from a collection of some eight million objects, Richard will explore the Archive’s remarkable contribution to the history of typography and printing in Britain. He studied punchcutting and matrix-making with the Archive’s senior craftspeople until its closure in 2023, gaining first-hand experience of the skills behind the design and production of the printed letter.
