SIGNES
Project Name: Wayfinding Design and Signage for Museo del Prado
Client: Museo Nacional del Prado
Sector: Cultural, heritage & museums
Location: Madrid, Spain
The role: Sign design, wayfinding, manufacture and installation
The brief: The Museo del Prado sought a refined and elegant wayfinding system to guide visitors through its extensive collection of galleries and public spaces. The challenge was to create a signage system that would be clear and accessible, without detracting from the aesthetic and historical integrity of the museum. The signs had to blend seamlessly into the neoclassical architecture while providing multilingual information to accommodate the museum’s large international audience. Additionally, the signage needed to enhance accessibility for all visitors, ensuring clear directions and information in an intuitive and visually cohesive manner.
Outcome: Signes designed and installed a sophisticated signage system that reflects the grandeur of the Museo del Prado. Arauna Studio contributed with the graphic design, ensuring that the signage remained visually cohesive. The solution harmonises with the museum’s architectural heritage, featuring minimalist and elegant typography that complements the classical environment. The materials used were carefully selected for durability and visual appeal, ensuring the signs can handle the heavy foot traffic while maintaining their aesthetic quality. Multilingual signage (Spanish and English) enhances the visitor experience, providing clear guidance throughout the museum. The system also integrates universal design principles, ensuring accessibility for visitors with disabilities. The result is a cohesive, timeless wayfinding system that supports the museum’s role as a world-renowned cultural institution while preserving the dignity of its historic architecture.
