Sign Design Society member, Dubai-based Genius Loci is pleased to announce that its innovative signage and wayfinding solutions design work on three recently completed, international commissions (one in Europe and two in the Middle East) has been rewarded with multiple gongs at the Transform Awards MEA 2024.
The company’s design work on the Ellinikon Experience Park, developed on the site of the former Ellinikon International Airport, in Athens, Greece, received awards. This is a landmark project that combines history with modernity. Genius Loci was tasked with creating a comprehensive wayfinding strategy and an intuitive signage system that aligns with the park’s landscape and architecture. The design approach focussed on simplicity and modernity, using sustainable materials such as natural wood from responsibly managed forests and recycled aluminium, to reflect the park’s environment and also support its eco-friendly narrative. The dual language system and iconography set ensure clear communication for local residents, tourists, and younger audiences, resulting in a cohesive signage solution that ensures a seamless, informative, and engaging experience for all visitors.
For their design work for Dubai Mall Zabeel, carried out in collaboration with architects BSBG and interior designers Studio M, Genius Loci won the Gold Award for Best Wayfinding and Signage at the 2024 Transform MEA Awards. Dubai Mall Zabeel is a creative extension of the world renowned Dubai Mall that caters to a youthful and bold audience with its industrial chic, gallery inspired ambiance. The design features internal lighting, perforated metals, and dot matrix fonts, all contributing to a cool, industrial vibe that resonates with the target audience. The signage system spans entryways, parking facilities, interior public realms, and operational spaces, ensuring a cohesive visual identity throughout Dubai Mall Zabeel. This design not only enhances the visitor experience but also aligns perfectly with the broader strategy of Dubai Mall’s ongoing expansion.
Genius Loci’s work for Atmosphere restaurant in the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, UAE was honoured with Gold for Best Use of a Visual Property and Silver for Best Wayfinding and Signage at the 2024 Transform MEA Awards. Atmosphere, situated on the 122nd floor of the iconic building, offers an unparalleled dining experience. During the restaurant’s interior redesign by renowned designers 1508, Genius Loci was tasked with creating identity signage that would not only blend seamlessly with the new ambiance but also reflect the essence of this extraordinary venue. The bold design approach transformed conventional signage into art installations. Utilising 3D printed components, gold plating, crystals, and various storytelling elements, intricate pieces were crafted that invite guests to interpret their own narratives.
