AIR DESIGN
Project Name: Kidbrooke Village
Client: Berkeley Group
Sector: Residential
Location: Royal Borough of Greenwich, London (UK)
Role: Wayfinding, sign design and map design
The Brief: Situated in one of London’s most popular locations – the London Borough of Greenwich – the scheme comprises four distinct neighbourhoods integrated seamlessly into one community. These include: The Village Centre (Birch House, Centrum Court and Agora Court), Meridian Gate, Blackheath Quarter and City Point.
Air Design’s wayfinding and signage scheme needed to effectively connect Berkeley Group’s iconic residential schemes with the retail, offices, F&B, green spaces, local culture and art pieces within the London streetscape.
Outcome: Air Design has helped Berkeley Group bring to life their vision of producing a world-class public realm for London by providing the residents with beautiful and connected spaces in which they have the freedom and ease to enjoy living.
The vibrant wayfinding scheme captures the development’s unique character and brand identity whilst comfortably unifying its natural and built environments.
A key criterion for the wayfinding system was to make it updatable for development phasing until 2029, to eventually cover 109 hectares and 35 acres of open parkland. Therefore, the biggest challenge was to design a flexible and effective wayfinding system, where this could be easily achieved without compromising the signage design or durability and ensuring the versatile aesthetic comfortably sits in Kidbrooke’s urban and natural surroundings. With this in mind, a modular system was created to ensure that the signs can be easily modified or updated as the scheme develops and grows. All signs are composed of trays on which the information can be easily removed and/or replaced, as required.
Kidbrooke Village has been awarded Best Placemaking at The Sunday Times British Homes Awards and Best Regeneration Development by Whathouse? Air Design was also awarded gold in the Wayfinding and Signage category for Kidbrooke Village at the Transform Awards 2020.
