Project Name: Quadram Institute

Client: Quadram Institute

Sector: Hospitals, healthcare and research

Location: Norwich (UK)

Role: The Quadram Institute is a new multi-million state-of-the-art food and health research and NHS endoscopy centre.  It will create new interfaces between food science, gut biology, human health and disease, capitalizing on the world-class bioscience cluster based at the Norwich Research Park.

The Brief: The Quadram Institute is one of the first endoscopy units in the UK. This state-of-the art facility houses world class research facilities and NHS patient spaces. It was therefore imperative that the signage worked within and between both spaces seamlessly.

ABG were involved with the project from its very early stages, working with the buildings architects NBBJ and the Quadram team to fully understand how the building was going to function when fully operational.

Patient privacy was also a very important consideration, especially in the NHS operating areas of the building. The solution was to design a sequence of branded frosting panels to ensure the areas that needed to be more private were, but without making the spaces overbearing and dark.

Outcome: Working alongside the architects, ABG Design came up with a signage family that fitted seamlessly with the Quadram brand and embraced the Institute’s corporate colour palette.

The signage family works hard and successfully to identify how the building is zoned, from clinical research through to a fully functional NHS hospital unit.

The internal and external signage at The Quadram Institute has been well received, with compliments from staff and patients. It fits seamlessly into its environment without getting in the way of the multiple visitor journeys that its users need to make.

ABG Design’s Howard Miles said: “We are really pleased to be part of this important project…the results are looking good and client is really pleased.”
