Project Name: University of Birmingham Digital Totem Signs
Client: University of Birmingham
Sector: Schools, colleges and universities
Location: Birmingham (UK)
Role: Sign scheme design, signs manufacture and signs installation
The Brief: xsign have a long-standing relationship with the University of Birmingham. The company have provided sign packages across a number of sites at the university campus, as part of its ongoing programme of renovation. xsign were appointed to lead on a signs package that included digital wayfinding totem signs across the campus, to aid wayfinding and navigation for staff, students and visitors.
Outcome: The initial install plan sees nine 55” touchscreen digital totem signs displayed. The full plan could see many more totems installed. xsign led on the hardware product design, liaising with the client on visual concepts and sample product testing, whilst working in conjunction with the software supplier to ensure compatibility and a seamless user interface.
The interactive double-sided totems feature a bespoke fabricated steel framework. Air inlets and outlets are provided, along with intercom integration. The casing is powder-coated with an anti-graffiti layer, for protection. Shatter-resistant, anti-reflective glass was used to improve visibility of the screens. The University of Birmingham logo is inlaid on an inset panel, allowing for future changes. xsign also provided reverse illumination with ultra-efficient white LEDs, which illuminate the logo at night. The totems are mounted to a concrete pad foundation for secure fixing.
This exciting new capability offers universities, schools, museums and offices a new and innovative way of helping users to engage with the space.
